Introduction

The Central Processing Unit (also known as CPU, processor, or microchip) is the brains behind any PC. Nowadays, that tiny microchip that fits in the palm of your hand, has enough juice to rip digital video, play the hottest 3D action shooter games, and surf the Internet all at the same time and all at blazing fast speeds! And seeing as its the most important part in any system, you will find its also the most expensive. In fact, if you are building your own PC you could wind up spending up to $300 for just the processor alone while other compoents could add up to only 1/2 of that cost. In this chapter I provide a complete overview of what functions the CPU controls and how it calculates data, as well as give you a thorough understanding of what aspects of the computer it controls. I will provide an evolution into the architecture of the CPU by providing a comparison look into different Intel and AMD CPU’s while maintaining focus on the architecture behind a processor unit.
